Job Interview Fact
Q: Let me ask you this. We just
reviewed a ton of questions. When you are
interviewing people, do you have a sense of how
many people know this type of information before
they go into a job interview? I am curious
to know how many people really know this stuff.
Is it half?
A: Actually, I would say less than 15%. It
is really surprising because when somebody comes
in and does know it, they come off as being very
polished. It is amazing to walk out of an
interview that you just had with someone who was
prepared for that interview. The feedback is
always phenomenal, and that person outshines
every other person that was there in that
interview.
That should be your goal going into it. Think
about the people you are competing against. If
they have a job, they might be really busy, they
might be there interviewing on their lunch break.
They might have kids at home and might not have
time at night, so they are literally trying to
just get in there for that one hour of time that
they have and do the best that they can. That is
the majority of people interviewing. So it is
worth doing whatever you have to do to take the
extra time to prepare for the interview. Some
people will even take the whole day off for a
4:00pm interview. They come in relaxed,
confident, and in the right frame of mind to give
a great job interview. It is those prepared
people, less than 15% of all applicants, that are
the ones that get the jobs. |
Put Yourself in the Top 15%! Give Yourself the
Advantage You Need to Give the Right Job Interview Answers
& Get the Job.

You get the Questions, Why they are Being Asked
and How to Best Answer them. If you need
to get prepared for an interview today- then
this is the way to go. All this
directly from a Professional Job Interviewer!
EXCERPT FROM
THE BOOK:
From the Question
"TELL me about yourself"
KEY POINTS:
-
Often the first question,
used as an icebreaker. Lets interviewer
get situated.
-
Lets the interviewer
learn about you, learn how you describe
yourself, and get a feeling for your
personality at the very beginning.
-
Know immediately how you
want to answer it when you go in.
-
Have a specific beginning
and an end planed out.
-
Tell the interviewer
about yourself as it relates to the job.
-
Keep your answers
specific to the topic at hand – The Job
and Your Career.
-
Give a really broad
overview of what has brought you from
that point to sitting in front of them
for the interview at this time.
-
Don’t tell your life
story.
TELL ABOUT YOURSELF WITHIN THE CONTEXT OF
YOUR CAREER:
Don’t let yourself ramble. Give more of a broad
overview rather than a specific day-by-day or
month-by-month explanation of who you are.
THE BEST WAY TO ANSWER IT:
Know where
you are going to start. If you have had
multiple jobs in different, unrelated
fields than the one you are interviewing
for, you may want to skip over the ones
that are irrelevant. Focus on job
experience that relates to the job you are
interviewing for. You are interviewing
for a job that you have chosen to be the
next step in your career, rather than just
the next job in a series of unrelated
jobs. So you are not looking to “find
yourself.” You are looking to land a job
in your chosen profession, which should be
a common theme throughout your answer.
Talk about
your experience and the skill sets you
have learned on your career path that can
help you succeed in this new position.
Paint a picture of a career path that
points out growth, and steps through
expansion of career and knowledge of the
industry.
You
definitely want to practice this answer.
You should immediately be able to answer
and know exactly how you want to answer it
when you go in. You don't want to start
with, “You know, I was born in North Carolina, went to elementary school…”
because the person interviewing you doesn’t care.
The question, “Tell me about Yourself”
leads people down many paths. Your answer
should not focus on what type of food you
like or what type of music you're
interested in. Tell the interviewer about
yourself, but framed within your work
experience.
Keep the
answers to this question job-centric and
follow a timeline that you’ve already
established. You should have a beginning
and an end. You should be selling
yourself in every question you answer
including this one and as with your other
answers, do not ramble. If the
interviewer wants to know more, they will
ask further questions.
Follow
Up Question: “What do you like to do
in you spare time?”
Have an answer prepared for this
follow up to the “Tell Me About
Yourself “question. This one can
throw a lot of people off. With the “Tell
Me about Yourself” answer, your
focus is to keep the answer
chronological and specific to the job
and your career. What do you do in
your spare time may surprise you if
you are not prepared.
KEEP IT INTERESTING:
Even if your favorite spare time
activities are, “Sleeping and
watching TV,” it is a good idea to
have a few interesting hobbies and
pastimes lined up for your answer; Try
golf, tennis, or fishing. “I like
to go to the gym,” or “I really
try to spend all of my spare time with
my family,” are both good
answers. Prepare a better answer
than, “I like to sit on my couch
and do nothing.” |

Here is a quick sample of
the Quick Start Guide Audio. How to you answer the question:
Tell me about yourself??
You want to keep this
from three to five minutes long. Start at a
point in your career and take it to where you
currently are in your career. Make it like a
chapter. Go by each job you worked, say a few
things, and this also gives you an opportunity
to hit on aspects of why you left the position
to avoid having that question later on. And it
also lets you address any gaps in your
employment that you might have. Make sure you
keep it under five minutes, and it's also great
way to tell them about the jobs you have done,
and have questions that kind of spawn off this
question and avoid maybe some more basic
questions down the line.
